Recovering from a total hip replacement requires a combination of proper care, physiotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments. We at Williams Physiotherapy can help you either in the prehabilitation or post operative stage. Here are key steps to ensure a smooth recovery:

1. Immediate Post-Surgery Phase (First Few Weeks)

Hospital Stay & Initial Movement:

You may stay in the hospital for 1-3 days. You'll start moving (with assistance) within 24 hours.

Follow your surgeon's instructions on weight-bearing restrictions.

Use assistive devices like a walker, cane, or crutches as recommended.

Pain Management:

Take over the counter or prescribed medications to control pain and prevent blood clots.

Ice the hip area to reduce swelling.

Wound Care:

Keep the surgical area clean and dry.

Watch for signs of infection (e.g., increased redness, swelling, or fever).

2. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is critical for regaining mobility, strength, and range of motion.

First Few Weeks:

Perform simple exercises like ankle pumps and glute squeezes to prevent blood clots and improve circulation.

Follow your therapist’s guidance on gentle stretches and strengthening exercises.

Progressive Mobility:

Gradually increase walking distances.

Avoid overexertion; rest as needed.

3. Home Adjustments

Make your home recovery-friendly:

Remove tripping hazards (e.g., rugs, cords).

Use a raised toilet seat and shower chair.

Arrange essentials within easy reach.

4. Lifestyle Modifications

Avoid Certain Movements for the first 8-10 weeks

Don’t cross your legs or twist at the hip.

Avoid bending your hip beyond 90 degrees.

Nutrition:

Eat a balanced diet rich in protein, calcium, and vitamin D to support healing.

Hydration:

Stay well-hydrated to aid tissue recovery and overall health.

5. Long-Term Recovery (Months 2-6)

Gradually resume daily activities.

Continue physiotherapy to strengthen hip muscles and improve flexibility.

Generally at this stage you can start light activities like swimming or cycling

6. When to seek medical advice

Severe pain or swelling.

Signs of infection.

Difficulty moving the leg.

Chest pain or shortness of breath (could indicate a blood clot).

With proper care, most people regain full mobility within 3-6 months. For a full assessment whether you are pre or post operation please either contact the clinic or book in below. We can help guide you every step of the way.
