When is it right to consider a knee brace?

You might consider using a knee brace for osteoarthritis (OA) when you experience any of the following:

1. Knee instability or weakness: If your knee feels unstable or wobbly, a brace can help provide support and improve stability during movement.

2. Pain during activity: If you're experiencing pain while walking, climbing stairs, or doing other activities, a knee brace can help alleviate pressure on the joint and reduce discomfort.

3. Difficulty with weight-bearing activities: A brace can help redistribute weight away from the damaged areas of the knee, reducing strain and making it easier to perform daily tasks.

4. To delay or avoid surgery: If you're trying to delay knee surgery, such as a total knee replacement, a brace may offer temporary relief and improve function in the meantime.

5. Post-surgery recovery: After certain surgeries, your doctor may recommend a brace to stabilize the knee and aid in recovery.

6. Alignment issues: For those with misalignment due to arthritis (like bow-legged or knock-kneed deformities), an "unloader" or "offloader" brace can help shift weight away from the more damaged part of the knee.
